The shape and
cutting pattern of the Kilree Standing
Cross in part replicates the shape of the
High Cross with motifs represented by
starburst and karo cutting patterns.
Situated in Co.
Kilkenny, Ireland, approximatley 30
minutes drive from Waterford City, the
Kilree High Cross is believed to be of the
9th century. This old monastic site is in
the middle of a cattle grazing field with
the cross standing at one end. It is a
sandstone cross standing 2.75 metres high,
most of which is covered with geometrical
motifs. The ends of the arms have some
sculpted figures, but these are difficult
to interpret. On the face is probably a
representation of the Adoration of the
Magi. |
